This is part four in our final focus on how aloe vera gel or its whole leaf extract contributes to increased absorption of medicines and nutraceuticals. The studies I submit for your perusal all made efforts to mention Acemannan along the way. But of course, mention would be made of Acemannan as it is the active ingredient of aloe. Everything we’ve researched so far points to a focus on better absorption of medicines and various substances.
What we will do now is take a look at a study where improved absorption is considered with nutraceuticals, specifically vitamin C and vitamin E. Wouldn’t it be great if Acemannan had already been stabilized so that you could add it to your nutritional regimen? Of course, it already has. It was discovered in 1985 and the first iteration of Acemannan was taken to market in 1994. The second iteration, which is more efficacious, was taken to market in the year 2020. Plus, we use a social business 3.0 model. More on that some other time, but this means that we serve malnourished children who receive matching nutrition with a special focus on Acemannan. Our customers, consumers, and business builders save lives.
The study in this regard is entitled, Effect of Aloe Vera Preparations on the Human Bioavailability of Vitamins C and E, published 2005. This is an in vivo study, meaning that the study was done using real people who volunteered. And as with other studies, mention is made here too of Acemannan with reference to one of its scientific names, beta-1,4-linked acylated manin interspersed with O-acetyl groups. They had a typo, though, when spelling Acemannan. That’s unfortunate, but we know what they meant.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and is one of the most popular of all nutraceuticals. In the vitamin C study, three groups were created:

The first group was the ones that took only vitamin C, a 500 mg dose of ascorbic acid. This is the control group.

The next group, the AVL group, took the same amount of vitamin C along with 60 ml of aloe vera whole leaf extract. The L in AVL stands for leaf. 60 ml is just over 2 ounces.

The third group, the AVG group, took the same amount of vitamin C along with 60 ml of aloe vera gel. The G in AVG stands for gel.
Once the doses were consumed, blood samplings were then taken at hours 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 24. The vitamin C results are displayed in this graph. The solid dark line represents those who took only vitamin C. As you can see, it peaked at 2 hours and then began to slowly descend over the 24-hour period, almost arriving back to the baseline at that time. The AVL group, the group that added aloe vera whole leaf extract to their vitamin C dosage, saw its peak at hour 4 and hour 8, though certainly short of the vitamin C control group measurements. For the remainder of the 24 hours, it slowly fell to near baseline, like the control vitamin C group did. The third group, the group that added aloe vera gel to their 500 mg of vitamin C, saw its peak at hour 4, a dip at hour 6, only to peak even higher at hour 8. The authors of the study contribute this double peak, and even the lesser double peak demonstrated by the aloe vera whole leaf extract, to what is known as the first pass effect. This is when the liver processes it first, first-pass, but stores some of it only to later initiate a re-release back into the bloodstream. However, the aloe gel group was still significantly higher than baseline at the 24-hour mark.
Vitamin E is also a very popular nutraceutical supplementation. However, unlike vitamin C, vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin. There was no effort in the study to make clear that this was natural vitamin E, though in the references at the bottom, another study was mentioned that did indeed use natural vitamin E called alpha-tocopherol. Another way to write natural vitamin E is D-A-tocopherol. If it says D-L-A-tocopherol, then it’s synthetic and less expensive. I’m not speaking authoritatively, but I stay away from synthetic, but especially synthetic vitamins that are fat-soluble.
As we move forward, the vitamin E studies are represented in this graph. First, we have the control group where the participants took a 420 mg soft capsule of vitamin E and no aloe gel. It is represented by the solid dark line. As you see in the graph, hour 1 fell below baseline and peaked at hour 4, but not much progress. It fell again below baseline at hour 8 and then slowly rose to just above baseline by hour 24. We’re not impressed, right? Well, the authors of this study not only acknowledged this, but they were quick to point out a study from 2002 that reflected the same results, especially when vitamin E is taken on an empty stomach, which was the case in this study as well.
But what we’re really interested in is what happens with the other two groups. The second group, the aloe whole leaf group, took the 420 mg of vitamin E and 60 ml, 2 ounces, of aloe vera whole leaf extract. Its first peak of plasma tocopherol was at hour 2. It fell to baseline at hour 4 and then showed a significant peak at hour 6. Again, we see that first-pass liver re-release thing. But at hour 24, it had not returned to baseline but had maintained some reasonable potency and presence.
Then the third group, the aloe gel group, took their vitamin E along with 60 ml of aloe vera gel. The plasma tocopherol test indicated that it peaked at hour 1 and 2, dropped a bit at hour 4, and then took a jump in hours 6 and 8. And by hour 24, it had sustained itself at a high level. Both aloes, leaf extract and gel, had a beneficial effect. They can be subject to liver involvement, but the vitamins last longer in the bloodstream with aloe present.
Aloe overall, in the words of the authors, is unique in its ability to improve the absorption of both of these vitamins and should be considered as an add-on for people who take vitamin supplements. Unless I find another study on this subject of absorption enhancement concerning aloe vera gel and Acemannan, we’ll consider this the final contribution to this subject.
