Paul told the Ephesians and tells us too, that we do indeed wrestle with principalities and powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, and spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies. These are all terms for demonic and wicked activity that is very present in our day and age.
Unfortunately, Christians are deceived into thinking that any spiritual wrestling is not necessary, after all, “things are relatively fine, no real trouble, no trauma, no tribulation to speak of. Things are not so hard and undesirable that I can’t handle it with my own human creativity and resources.” This kind of person is led through life by the nose. The nose ring has been subtly planted by the lies, including some religious doctrines, and without even knowing are being overcome by evil in an evil age. This person, who does not wrestle in prayer with evil, is in the process of being overcome by evil.
Why should we be people who wait for trouble to start happening before we start praying? Why not start some trouble…through prayer? If we are in a wrestling match, as Ephesians confirms, then we might as well get aggressive and play to win. The alternative is certainly not worth it. Why should the devil own the title of the initiator of trouble when we are the ones with all the fine weaponry, like the name and authority of Jesus, the blood of Jesus, our testimony, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God?
Why should the purposes of the devil, including stealing, killing, and destroying, be allowed exaltation above the purposes of God, which includes redemption, forgiveness, peace, life, health, and provision?
Okay, enough said, let’s get to wrestling.
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21.
